1st: Patsy Roche and Kathleen Collins.
2nd: Breda Cowman and Mary Kennedy.
3rd: Fr. O Byrne and Eileen Kirwan.

Proud Neighbours.

My friends The McGraths up in Ballygarron contacted me the other day to tell me how proud they were of their good neighbours John and Keiran Guiry who ran the Dublin marathon recently in great times and Sinead also walked the route. This is indeed a great achievement and they should be very proud of themselves.
In fact we also congratulate anyone else from the parish who took part . A lot of training, discipline and dedication goes into anything like that and such commitment is to be admired and congratulated.

Recycling Time.

A reminder to you all that this is the last week you can avail of the recycling opportunity which is being hosted by Ballyduff AFC. The items will be collected this Friday November 11th. Gather up your unwanted items such as clothes, bed linen, curtains, shoes, handbags etc and bring them along to the clubhouse any evening between 6pm and 8pm.

The special November Dead List masses will begin this Wednesday night at 7.30pm and will continue each Wednesday night during the month of November. These masses are offered for the intentions of all those who have placed their mass offerings into the special box which is in front of the altar. The last of the masses on November 30th is offered especially for all those who have died in the past 12 months. These people do not have to have been buried here in our parish to be entered in for this mass. If you would like to add the name of a loved one onto the list then please write their name on the list in the church porch or contact Linda Spillane on 087-9838392.

Golden Birthday.

I will probably receive a telling off for putting this in the notes but that has never stopped me before. On behalf of all my family I would like to wish my eldest sibling Mary O Leary a very happy 50th birthday. We were treated to a great night out to celebrate, organised by her husband Eamonn and daughters Jessica and Amy. We all flocked to The Sweep where we danced the night away to the sounds of the great John O Shea. I know Mary was overwhelmed by the amount of family and friends who turned up to party the night away and she is very grateful to them all. We wish Mary our Minnie as she is better known to the family as continued happiness, good health and laughter.

November Masses.

I really can’t believe that we are already talking about the month of November. I think I’ve missed a few months somewhere. November of course is the month we remember our departed relatives and friends in a special way. Although they are never far from our thoughts we offer special masses for them in November.
In Ballyduff church these masses will take place every Wednesday night in November at 7.30pm. The masses are offered for the intentions of all who place mass offerings in the special Holy Souls box which will be placed in front of the altar from November 1st.
A reminder that the final mass on November 30th will be offered especially for those who died in the past 12 months. Those who were buried in the parish graveyard will automatically be added to this list but if you have a relative or friend who died outside the parish and you would like to have them included please call Linda Spillane on 087-9838392 and their name will be added. At this mass a representative of the deceased will be presented with a candle in their memory.

Running Group.

A reminder that a beginners running groug will begin on Saturday November 5th at 11am in Ballyduff AFC grounds. This will run for four Saturdays at a cost of €25. Instructor Seamus Doyle from Balance Fitness will teach you all the correct techniques like posture, pace, and breathing. If you would like any more information or would like to book your place please call Seamus Doyle on 087-7864013 or Tony Latham on 087-2861430.

County Champs!
There was great scenes of excitement and delight in Fraher field last weekend when our Junior hurlers saw off a strong St.Marys team to become County Champions and put themselves back in the Intermediate field. Ballyduff were the stronger team from the start with great speed and level of fitness. There were some real standout performances but together they were a very tight unit and displayed a great committment and dedication to each other and their management and training team. It was heartwarming to see so many from the parish turn out to support the team. The club put in great work to encourage the game from academy level up and the excitement on the faces of the children is something I will never forget. Of course the reception the guys got when they brought the cup to Ballyduff N.S on the Monday was spectacular. The children cheered and waved their well made flags and signs. It was a great experience for the children to see lads from their own club show them what can be achieved with hard work and committment. As I write these notes the lads are getting prepared to take on Kilgarvan from Kerry but as you read these notes you will know what happened so hopefully you are smiling.

A Friend To All

Our parish is most certainly a much poorer place following the death of one of its most popular characters Willie Melvey. Willie was what I would describe as a lovable rogue. He had a natural charm that automatically drew people to him. There is no possible way you could count how many friends he had because he was a friend to everyone and could make you smile no matter what kind of day you were having. His great love and connection with nature was always evident as he fed the birds, took care of the swans on Knockaderry Lake and tended to his garden. He was a man of tremendous faith and I think Fr. O Byrne hit the nail on the head when he likened Willie to St. Francis of Assissi. May Willies’ gentle soul rest in peace and may his kind nature in spire us all.

Our Sympathies.
We extend our sympathies to the Daly family on the recent death of Liz Daly in Dingle. Liz, her husband Sean and their family were of course popular residents of Ballyduff Village for many years. May she rest in peace.
We also extend our sympathy to Liza O Neill of Matthews Cross on the recent death of her uncle Richie Dwyer in Duncannon. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family.

Baby Delight.
Congratulations and Best wishes to John and Joanne Whelan of Matthews Cross on the birth of their beautiful baby boy recently. Baby has been given the strong name Tom which I am sure brings great pride to both sides of the family. I am sure Daddy John has gained so much experience from the creche that Joanne won’t have to lift a finger!! We hope that John, Joanne and Tom enjoy a lifetime of good health and happiness.

Eastern Final.

The lads have put in a lot of training and effort into their preparation and have played some fine games in the run up to the final. It’s our chance to get behind the lads and cheer them on. Let’s see the red and white cover Walsh Park and hear the mighty Ballyduff cheer.

Collect up all your recyclable clothes, bed linen, curtains, shoes, bags etc and drop them to the club room at the soccer club any week night between 6pm and 8pm. This will run until November 11th so there is no excuse you have plenty of time to clear out those wardrobes and hot presses.

Parent and Toddler

A reminder to all parents, guardians and childminders that Ballyduff’s parent and toddler group run every Friday morning from 10am to 12 noon in Ballyduff community centre. This is a perfect opportunity for the adults to meet up for a chat and a cuppa while the babies and toddlers are busy playing toys and making new friends. You do not have to stay for the full two hours just pop in when you can.

Double Delight.

These good wishes are a bit late but I had my reasons for that. I wanted to give this family the time they needed to adjust to their new life and get the peace and quiet they needed to get themselves strong and ready to face the world. Tom and Jacinta Reddy were busy preparing for the arrival of their expected twins when those twins decided that life on the outside looked too exciting and interesting so they surprised everyone by arriving earlier than expected. Tom and Jacinta are over the moon to have been blessed with two beautiful daughters Ava and Sophia. Of course these delighted parents are very lucky to have great help at home from the girls big brother Scott. Scott is now in 3rd class and so has gathered a wealth of knowledge which he can pass on to his sisters. We sincerely wish this lovely family every happiness and may their futures be full of good health, happiness and laughter.

Thankfully this year the weather was a lot kinder and there was a great atmosphere around the place. Following the event the runners and walkers returned to the community centre where there was a fine array of sandwiches and cakes. Well done to all who supported this event. All proceeds went to the community centre.
Wedded Bliss

We send our heartiest congratulations to local man Brian O Leary of Blacknock who travelled to Faithlegg church recently to marry his sweetheart Laura O Shea. Laura was trully a stunning bride and Brian made a handsome groom and their bridal party was made all the cuter by their children Cathal and Chloe. A wonderful reception was celebrated in The Woodlands hotel and on Sunday they were joined once again by family and friends in The Sweep. We wish this happy little family every best wish for the future.

Coffee Morning

We all know the wonderful work which is done by The Hospice. They not only provide help and support to the patient but also to the patients family. Like every good charity they do not receive the funding they deserve and so rely heavily on the generosity of the public.
We have the opportunity to support them here in our area on Thursday September 15th when there will be a coffee morning in O Donnachas. All we have to do is spread the word and drop along with our friends for a nice cup of tea or coffee and one of O Donnachas world famous scones. What a nice way to spend an hour or two while helping a very worthwhile charity
