World Championships, Little Princess and Community Garden

BIRTHDAY WISHES

We send warm birthday wishes to Aidan Millea, Ballyduff Village who recently celebrated his 30th birthday. Aidan enjoyed his day with his family and friends and I’m sure they made sure he was spoiled.
Also celebrating this week was Helena Power, Matthews Cross as she turned the young age of 70. Helena is a wonderful neighbour and friend to all in Matthews Cross and I am sure her husband Eddie waited on her hand and foot all day and that her dog Bosco made sure she got plenty of cuddles.

GRAVEYARD MASS

The annual cemetery mass in Ballyduff cemetery will take place on Wednesday July 26th at 7pm. If you are tidying up your family grave before the mass, please bring home any rubbish or old plants and flowers as there are no bins at the graveyard.
Following the graveyard mass there will be a cup of tea and some refreshments served in the community centre. This is a lovely opportunity to meet old friends and new. If you would like to donate some buns or biscuits, please contact Linda Spillane on 087 9838392.

GAA LOTTO

The numbers drawn in the latest lotto draw were 1, 2, 4, and 8 and there was no winner of the jackpot. The three lucky dip winners of €50 each were Kathleen Harris, Stan Bergin and Senan Cooke. The next draw will take place on July 23rd and there will be a jackpot of €10,400 up for grabs. Tickets cost just €2 each or three for €5 and are on sale from all committee members and will also be on sale at Centra on Saturday July 22nd. Choose those 4 lucky numbers and you could enjoy a nice holiday or shopping spree.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 11th WUKF World Karate Championships took place in Dundee, Scotland from July 13th to the 16th and The Pat Rockett Karate and Kickboxing club from Waterford City headed there to represent their country with pride. One of the competitors was Kilmeaden’s own Charlie Laffan. Charlie has been excelling at his sport for the past few years and really loves what he does. He is very dedicated and committed and trains extremely hard. In next week’s notes we will be able to report on how the Championships went and no doubt there will be lots of positive news.

A LITTLE PRINCESS

We all send our warmest congratulations to popular employee of The Sweep Bar and Restaurant, Carol Kiely, and her partner Pat on the recent birth of their beautiful baby daughter. Baby Rosie arrived just a few days before Mammy’s birthday and what a wonderful gift to receive. We are all looking forward to meeting Rosie and wish this happy little family every happiness for the future.

RECENT DEATH

We extend our deepest sympathies to the Costello family in Butlerstown on the recent death of Michael Costello. Michael had many friends here in Kilmeaden. He was a true gentleman who loved his family and was a true friend to so many. A gifted mechanic but his other great passion was cycling. He loved to get out on the road with his fellow cyclists enjoying a chat and laugh along the way. He was also a huge supporter of his beloved Butlerstown GAA club. Michael’s health deteriorated in recent years, but he faced every challenge with strength and courage. Michael will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Angela, his son Tyrone, daughter Aislinn and his adored grandson James, his brothers Johnny, Tommy, Mossie and Joey, his sisters Maureen, Helen, Bridget, Anne, Catherine and Martina, his extended family and his many friends.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

Finally, all the paperwork has been completed and the entrance to the garden has been opened. Some grass cutting has taken place and some plans are now being discussed as to where to place the different areas. There will be a lot of groundwork which will need to be done to lay out the plan for the garden and the group are looking forward to getting stuck in. The group are also trying to raise some funds to get started and hope to apply for some grants as they become available. They have been delighted to receive some donations from businesses and individuals and are very grateful to everyone for their support. Wedding Day, Graveyard Mass and Tractor Run

Anniversary Celebrations

There has been a lot of love in the air in the past couple of weeks with many couples celebrating their wedding anniversaries. Mark and Rachel Kennedy in Ballyduff West have shared 39 years of wedded bliss and I am sure they celebrated their happy day with their daughters and their beloved grandchildren. I’m sure Rachel may even have treated Mark to a serenade with her beautiful voice. Also celebrating were Ger and Aileen Barron in Kildermody. This very popular couple have 30 years of marriage under their belt and enjoyed their day with Fionn, Dearbhla and Sorcha and I have no doubt that they may have had a song or two by the great Michael Hearne. Meanwhile up in Kilmagemogue Dermot and Louise Dooley marked 20 years of marriage with their beautiful children Darragh, Ava, Cathal and Olivia. Dermot loves nothing better than a good GAA game but I’m sure he knows that meeting Louise was the best match of his life. We wish all these happy couples many more years of happiness together.

Happy Retirement

It was the end of an era in Kilmeaden last week when Pat Hennessy hung up his spanners and sockets at Hennessy’s garage. Pat celebrated 60 years in business in April and has now decided to sell the business and enjoy a more relaxing, carefree lifestyle. Pat has enjoyed his working life and has made some wonderful friends along the way. He is due a rest now but knowing Pat he won’t be sitting around doing the crossword. He will now have more time to attend some GAA games and of course his grandchildren will find ways to keep him busy. Kathleen and himself may take a little breakaway or two. We wish Pat and Kathleen, who was by his side throughout his working life, keeping all the accounts and paperwork in order, a very happy and healthy retirement. We thank Pat for his years of service and commitment to the area and for the employment he generated.

Wedding Day

We send our heartiest congratulations to Jason Walsh, Ballyduff who was recently married in Tramore Church to his sweetheart Claire Cowman. The couple exchanged their vows in front of their family and friends. Two very important guests, the couple’s children Mia and Noah watched with great pride and interest, making sure that their Mammy and Daddy got everything right. Following the ceremony, it was off to The Brandon House Hotel in New Ross to celebrate in style and dance the night away. We wish this happy couple a very happy marriage and a very bright future with their little family.

Graveyard Mass

The annual graveyard mass at St. Nicholas’s Church, Ballyduff will take place on Wednesday July 26th. This is always a lovely way to remember and honour our loved ones who have gone before us and to offer our prayers for those who are buried there but no longer have someone left to pray for them. Please remember that if you are tidying up your family grave or replacing flowers, please bring a rubbish bag to bring home your old flowers.
Please spread the word to people outside the parish who may have people buried in the graveyard.

Tractor Run

Every year the annual tractor run in Kilmeaden is a much looked forward to event and it is always a great day out. A very hard-working committee ensure each year that this event is the best that it can possibly be. The safety of the participants and spectators is of utmost importance with stewards covering all the areas around the route. Sunday July 16th is the all-important date and the starting point and registration take place at Haughtons Pub. The run will begin at 1pm sharp. The route is a beautiful scenic trip through the countryside. Upon return participants need to rehydrate with a lemonade or two and their own engines need replenishing with the tasty barbeque. Tractors are parked up for the night and everyone enjoys a great laugh and a chat with old friends and new.
This event has raised a lot of money for charity over the years and this year the recipient will be Pieta House. This charity provides an excellent service, not only for their clients but also for the families who are also in need of help and support. Many lives are saved due to charities like this, and we must do everything we possibly can to help them to continue their fantastic work.

Recent Death

We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin O Reilly, Ardeenlone on the recent death of his father Denis O Reilly. Denis was a resident of Knockaun East in Cappoquin. Denis, who was a retired member of An Garda Siochana is predeceased by his beloved wife Angela. He will be sadly missed by his sons Martin and Kevin, his brother Tadgh, his daughter-in-law Tracey, his beloved granddaughters Bonnie, Sophie, Maisie and Trudie and all his extended family and many friends. Denis’s funeral mass took place in St. Mary’s Church, Cappoquin followed by burial in Mount Melleray Abbey Cemetery.
I had the pleasure some years ago of having a few chats with Denis when he would collect his adored granddaughters from school. He was a lovely quiet unassuming man who was genuinely interested in what you had to say. He and his late wife Angela would be so excited about collecting the girls and literally idolized them.
We now pray that Denis is at rest and reunited with his beloved wife Angela. May their sweet gentle souls now rest in the peace and love of Christ.

Recent Death

We extend our deepest sympathies to Maria Mackey, Ross on the recent death of her beloved mother. Mrs. Mary Hogan (nee O Donoghue) was a resident of Raheen, Co. Limerick. She will be sadly missed by her sons James, Albert, Noel and Ray, her daughters Marie, Annette, Pauline, Margaret and Nuala, her adoring grandchildren, sisters, brother and extended family.
Mary’s funeral mass took place in St. Nessan’s Church, Raheen followed by burial in Mount St. Oliver cemetery. We pray that Mary now rests in peace and that her family will draw comfort from their wonderful memories.

Birthday Celebrations

We extend warm birthday wishes to Damien Hennessy, proprietor of Gala in Kilmeaden who recently celebrated his 40th birthday. Damien celebrated with his family and friends in his native New Ross. We hear that a great night was had by all, and we wish Damien many more happy birthdays to come.
Also celebrating last week was Anna Nolan, Ballyduff Hill. Anna celebrated her 90th birthday with her family and friends and enjoyed herself. Her daughters Noeleen and Maria and grandchildren Siobhan, Niamh and Josh ensured that Anna’s birthday was celebrated in style. We wish Anna continued good health and many more happy birthdays.

Viking Marathon

There was great excitement on Sunday June 25th as the Viking Marathon took place along the Greenway. Many people from our community took part and we congratulate them all. Competing in the full marathon was Ballyduff West man Pat Fitzgerald and he crossed the line in 4th place. What a fantastic achievement for Pat and we send our heartiest congratulations to him.

Waterford Suir Valley Railway

Many people ask about experiencing the entire 10km return journey from Kilmeaden station to Bilberry station, but this is usually only for pre-booked groups. However, you can enjoy this full trip as part of The Sunset Express which will take place every Thursday night during the months of July and August. The Sunset Express is very popular and early booking is advised. Before departing the station, you can relax on the platform with some Prosecco and strawberries while listening to some acoustic music. Time then to board the train and receive your picnic box full of delicious seasonal and locally produced culinary delights from the award-winning Grow HQ Café in Waterford. A beautiful trip, taking in the beautiful sights along the way is a perfect way to experience the sights and sounds along the Greenway. This trip is very popular with adult groups, social clubs, hen parties, landmark birthdays, anniversaries and even a romantic marriage proposal.
The other good news is that Barry Bear and Honey Bear will visit the railway every Sunday to say hello to all the children. Drop along for a chat and take a spin on the train. Remember there are lots of lovely treats to purchase at the Whistlestop Café so bring along your appetite.

The final drop-off day will be Thursday September 7th at 10am so that means you have plenty of time to get that sorting done and clear out those wardrobes and hot presses. The items which can be included are all men’s, women’s and children’s clothes, paired footwear, handbags, belts, soft toys, curtains, towels and bedlinen. They do not accept pillows, duvets or carpets. What a great chance to get those clothes sorted while helping to raise money for your local club.

Bridge News

The Ballyduff and Portlaw Bridge club held their most recent game on Monday June 19th and the results were as follows: 1st: Anne-Marie Brown and Mary Prendergast. 2nd: Patsy Roche and Kathleen Collins. 3rd: Ann Cox and Peggy Murphy.
The group were hosting their Summer Bridge Night on Monday June 26th in The Sweep, so we look forward to hearing all about it.
The club were very saddened to hear of the death of their esteemed member and friend Celia Nugent. Celia’s gentle presence and wonderful, warm smile will be greatly missed by all the members of the club. They extend their deepest sympathies to her husband John and all the family. May her gentle soul now rest in peace.

Butler (Johnville FC). The next draw takes place on July 4th in Nicky’s Bar, Mayors Walk and there will be a jackpot of €1,100 on offer.

Deise Win

Congratulations to Declan and Breda Finn, Lacka Road who were recent winners in the annual Deise Draw. They were the lucky winners of €250 and we wish them every happiness.

Gala Birthday

We send warm birthday wishes to Damien and Majella and all at Gala in Kilmeaden who are celebrating their 9th year in Kilmeaden. Their business has really gone from strength to strength, and they have shown great belief in our area. They have made increased investment into the business, offered great employment opportunities and continue to give fantastic support to local clubs and charities. We wish them continued success and hope that their business enjoys great success in the future.

School’s Out

We wish all the pupils at Jelly Tots Playschool, Kiddies Kingdom Montessori and Ballyduff N.S a very happy and safe Summer as they begin their school holidays. We also wish all the teachers and staff a wonderful Summer and thank them for all their hard work and commitment.
The majority of the Leaving and Junior Certificate students have now finished their exams and we hope that they are pleased with how they went. We hope that now take time to relax and recharge after all the studying and stress. Time to enjoy some free time catching up with friends and making the most of the nice weather.

Gold for Aura

Aura Skin and Laser Clinic in the Ballinakill Shopping Centre on the Dunmore Road is owned by Kilmeaden lady Maria Power (nee Smith) and they recently celebrated great success as they were named the Gold Salon of Excellence 2023. Chosen from salons across Ireland and the U.K, Aura Skin and Laser Clinic excelled and came away with the Gold Award. This is a fantastic achievement and Maria is always the first to acknowledge her wonderful, dedicated staff and of course her loyal customers. Maria, however, must take credit too for building such a successful business and continuing to dedicate herself to its prosperity. We wish her continued success for many years to come.

Local Connection

Mayor John O Leary recently held a Mayoral reception to honour Waterford Hockey club who have enjoyed a hugely successful season. There were six residents of Ballyduff and Kilmeaden present at this reception as part of the group. Alistair Shute from Ballyduff is Vice Chairman of the club and accepted the scroll on behalf of the club. Alistair and his son Malachy both play in goal for Waterford Hockey club. Malachy played as one of the first eleven who won the Munster Charity Cup and reached the final of the Munster Senior Cup. Alistair, playing for the second men’s team who won both the McClean Cup and the Barber Cup. The Fletcher family from Kilmeaden were also in attendance with Robyn who was captain of the U16 Ladies’ team who finished third in their Munster League. Her brother Matthew plays on the U13 team who finished second in their Munster League. This team is coached by Dad Jonathan and finally the youngest member of the family, Peter, represented the U8 team. Mayor John O Leary congratulated the club on their wonderful season and on their contribution to the wider Waterford community.

Church News

GAA Lotto.

Pat is a very popular regular visitor to our parish and has presided over many weddings and christenings. Always positive and friendly Fr. Pat puts everyone at ease and of course always enjoys a song or two. We wish Fr. Pat many more happy years in Our Lord’s work.

Recent Deaths

We extend our deepest sympathies to Noel O Sullivan, Matthews Cross on the recent death of his uncle Pat O Sullivan in England. We pray that he now rests in peace.
We also extend our condolences to Fr. Garrett Desmond, Newtown on the recent loss of his mother Pauline. Funeral mass took place in St. Brigid’s Church, Killrossanty followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Award Winner

Congratulations to Ava Spillane, Matthews Cross who recently attended the Mirror Mirror Hairdressing Awards in Cork and returned home with two second place awards and a third place. This is a fantastic achievement, and her family and friends are very proud of her. Ava is a member of The Shades Hairdressing Salon in Ferrybank where she receives wonderful support and encouragement. We wish Ava many happy years in the profession she loves.

Memorial Tournament

The names of Tom Cheasty and Derek Ryan are mentioned with great pride within Ballyduff GAA club and both men had several things in common. Both men were taken from this world way before their time, both left their heart and soul on the pitch every time they played, and both wore the Ballyduff jersey with great pride. The club like to honour these two men each year by hosting a memorial tournament. This year, the tournament will take place on Sunday July 2nd in Tom Cheasty Park, Kildermody, Kilmeaden. The club’s U12 team will take on Kilrossanty at 12 noon while the Intermediates will face the Brickey Rangers at 1.30pm. There will also be a delicious BBQ and fun for all the family, so drop along and enjoy a lovely community day remembering two wonderful men.

Kilmeaden Vintage Tractor Run.

Each year people eagerly await the Kilmeaden Vintage Tractor Run. This is always a great day out with something for everyone. Tractors of every size, colour and make can be found heading to the starting spot at Haughtons in Kilmeaden for a 1pm sharp start. They proceed on a beautiful scenic route around the area with plenty of stewards along the route to ensure everything runs smoothly. Returning to Haughtons, vehicles are parked up as hunger and thirst set in. The smell of a delicious BBQ is too inviting to ignore, followed by one or two lemonades. The atmosphere is always wonderful with many friends and tractor enthusiasts catching up, reminiscing, and discussing the latest in farm machinery.
This group have raised a large amount of money over the years for many Waterford charities and this year all money collected for entries and through donations will be presented to Pieta House Waterford. The work this charity does in Waterford and surrounding areas is exceptional and they work tirelessly for their clients and their families. Like many charities they depend greatly on donations so we must help in any small way we can to keep these wonderful amenities going. Maith an Cailin

Congratulations and best wishes to local lady Siofra Phelan, Ardeenlone who has been awarded a Gaeltacht Residency Scholarship. She will attend Colaiste Naomh Einne on Inis Mor on the Aran Islands for the academic year of 2023/2024. Siofra is a Junior Cert student at St. Declan’s Community College in Kilmacthomas. Through Sceim na bhFoghlaimeoiri Gaeilge, Siofra submitted a personal statement and then attended an interview in the GRETB Head office in Athenry, Co. Galway back in March. Siofra is thrilled with her scholarship and was delighted to have the opportunity to attend an open day at the college. Exam Time

We wish continued good luck and best wishes to all the young men and women from our community who are sitting their Junior and Leaving Certificate exams at the moment. The work has been done so we hope the papers will be kind to them. We hope they remember to take time out too, get some fresh air and eat well. It will all be done soon and then there will be time to enjoy the Summer.

The church choir rehearses every Wednesday night at 8pm in the church and are always ready to welcome new members. The choir are a real asset to our Sunday mass and the congregation are encouraged to join in.
A reminder that there is no Saturday evening mass at the moment as the priest is away, but it will return soon hopefully.

Ballyduff AFC on tour.

The U12 and U14 girls at Ballyduff AFC recently headed off on their end of season trip. The bus was boarded, and they headed for Wexford where they played a few friendly games against North End United. In the crowd watching these friendly games was Tom Elmes who is the Ireland Women’s team assistant manager. I bet he spotted some up and coming talent. To cool off after their games the girls headed to the beautiful Curracloe beach to do a bit of surfing and cool off. Of course, after all that activity bellies began to rumble so they stopped off at Supermacs before taking the road home. A great day was had by all, and wonderful memories were made.

Mini World Cup.

Ballyduff AFC grounds will be a hive of activity at the weekend when teams from every country will assemble to compete for the honour of being the winners of the girls Mini World Cup. The competition is open to all girls in the U12, U14 and U16 age groups and is open to club members and non-members. The teams will be 5 a side and the entry fee is €5. Registration closes this evening (13th) and you can register by following the link on the club’s Facebook page or by calling 086 3135984. What a great way to stay active while having fun and making new friends.

The club would like to thank all at “Hunt Office” who have sponsored a new set of jerseys for the Intermediate team. The team are very grateful and look forward to a good season ahead.
The club has organised a fun ball run in aid of the Ballyduff/Portlaw Feile 2023. On June 16th at 7pm 1,000 numbered coloured balls will be dropped at the top of the school hill and the first 3 to pass the line at the bottom will win prizes. Graduation Day

Warmest congratulations go to Eabha Jones,Lacka Road who recently graduated from University College, Cork with an honours degree in Medicine. She previously graduated from Trinity College,Dublin with a degree in English and Philosophy. Eabha graduated on Friday May 26th in Cork which was a very proud day for her family. What a just reward for all the study and hard work Eabha put into her studies. Her family are extremely proud of her achievements, especially her grandparents Jamsie and Rena Power in Blacknock. We wish Eabha the very best of luck in the future.

Bridge News

The Portlaw/ Ballyduff Bridge Club played their latest bridge game on Monday 29th of May and the results were as follows:1st: Kathleen Collins and Patsy Roche, 2nd: Margaret White and Mary Prendergast and 3rd: Breda Murphy and John Fitzpatrick.

GAA Lotto

The four lucky numbers drawn in the latest GAA lotto draw were 5,12, 18 and 19 and there was no winner of the jackpot. The three lucky dip winners of €50 each were Yvonne Hoban, Michael Walsh and Ann Barry. The next draw takes place on June 11th and there will be a fantastic jackpot of €9,950 up for grabs. Tickets cost just €2 each or three for €5 and can be purchased from any committee member, online or volunteer sellers will be at Centra in Kilmeaden on Saturday June 10th. What a lovely way to celebrate the beginning of Summer, just choose those four numbers wisely.

Trudie’s Big Moment.

Well done and congratulations to Trudie O Reilly who represented Ballyduff N.S in the Primary Games which were played during half time in the Waterford V Tipperary match in Semple Stadium. Ballyduff Lower camogie player Trudie represented her school and club with great pride and what a wonderful experience for this very talented player. Trudie has a great future ahead so watch out as Semple Stadium and Croke Park become very familiar to her.

Shield Win

Celebrations were in full flow last weekend as Ballyduff AFC as their over 35’s team had a great win in the shield final. The team met Abbeyside in the final game and came out winners with a 2-0 scoreline. The team put in a brilliant performance from every position on the field and truly deserved the win. Following the game, the trophy was presented to captain Paul Lenihan who acknowledged the efforts put in by the entire squad throughout the year and to Manager Michael Hearne for his dedication and commitment. The team celebrated in The Sweep after the game and were very grateful to Michelle and all the staff for the food and hospitality. Player of the year award went to Mark Phelan. What a great way to end the season for these lads and the club are very proud of them all.

Recent Death

We extend our deepest sympathies to Helen Millea, Newtown Kilmeaden on the recent death of her beloved father Frankie Keohan. Frankie was a proud resident of Lisduggan and a former employee of Waterford Chipboard factory. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Eily, his daughters and sons Rose, Bernadette, Frankie, Anne, Helen, Oliver and Grace, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, extended family, friends and neighbours. We pray that Frankie now rests in the peace and love of Christ.

Local Gent

Our community was deeply saddened by the death of local man Eamonn (Ned) Kelly, Springhill, Kilmeaden. Ned was a very well-liked member of the community who always had a smile and a chat for everyone he met. In the past few years, he was a regular visitor to the Waterford Suir Valley Railway where he loved to sit and enjoy a coffee while having a chat with all who passed by. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Alice and Nora, his cousins, extended family, friends and neighbours. We hope that he now rests in peace and is enjoying his heavenly resting place.

Gold Success

We send warm congratulations to Charlie Laffan who is a member of the Pat Rockett Karate and Kickboxing Academy who recently won gold at the National Championships. Charlie works very hard at his training and truly deserves his success. We wish him the very best of luck for the future.

The Portlaw/Ballyduff Bridge Club played their latest game on Monday May 22nd and the results were as follows: 1st: Patsy Roche and Kathleen Collins. Ballyduff AFC

The club would like to congratulate two of their club players who are now All Ireland Winners. Orla Swift is part of the Waterford U16 Inter League squad who came from 2 goals down to defeat Clare in the All-Ireland Shield Final. Orla adds this All-Ireland medal to the Munster Medal which she won earlier in the season. Kayleigh O Neill was also an All-Ireland winner with the Waterford U12 Inter League Squad who defeated Mayo 1-0 in the All-Ireland Shield Final. The club are really looking forward to their Summer Camp which will take place on July 3rd and is always a big hit with all who take part. Wedded Bliss.

We send our warmest wishes and congratulations to local couple Shay and Edel Searson, Gortaclode who celebrated their 28th Wedding Anniversary recently. This lovely couple fell in love in their teenage years with many a request played over the airwaves on the Love Zone. They now reside in their beautiful home in Gortaclode with their daughter Amber and son Scott. We wish them every best wish for the future and wish them many more happy years of wedded bliss.

Recent Deaths

We send our deepest sympathies to Peggy O Shea, Ballyduff Hill and Nancy O Sullivan, Matthews Cross whose two sisters-in-law died in the past couple of weeks. Bridget Power, late of Ballymacmague, Dungarvan was a lady of style and glamour but whose most attractive feature was her enormous heart of gold. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Sean, her son Greg, daughter Grace, grandson Fergus, extended family and many friends. We pray that her sweet gentle soul now rests in the peace and love of Christ.
Breda Power was a proud Wexford woman living in Abbeyside, Dungarvan. She was a great character who could make the stones laugh and of course she was a fantastic baker whose apple tarts left your mouth watering. She will be lovingly remembered always by her sons Leo and John-Paul, her daughters Mary and Trisha, her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and friends. Breda was laid to rest in Ballyduff cemetery with her beloved husband Mattie. We take comfort in knowing that they are now reunited and together again.

Exam Time

We wish the very best of luck to all the young people from our parish who are preparing to sit their Junior Cert and Leaving Cert exams. We hope everything goes well for them and that they realise that results will not define them and that there are many roads to take to get to where you want to be. Remember to take time out from study to relax and refresh.

New Additions

We give a warm welcome to the new arrivals to Knockaderry Lake and congratulate Mammy and Daddy on the arrival of their eight new babies. What a beautiful, uplifting sight at nature at its very best. Knockaderry Lake is the perfect place for these beautiful creatures to grow up.

Church News, Bridge News and Official Opening

GAA Lotto

Ballyduff Lower GAA club held their recent lotto draw on May 14th and had a jackpot of €9,650 on offer. The numbers drawn were 12, 14, 17 and 19 but there was no lucky winner. There were three lucky dip winners of €50 each and they were Eamon Halley, Eileen Power and Brendan Butler. The next draw will take place on May 28th and there will be a fantastic jackpot of €9,800 up for grabs. Tickets cost just €2 each or three for €5 and what a return you may get for your money. You can purchase your tickets online, from any committee member or volunteer sellers will be at Centra in Kilmeaden on Saturday May 27th. Choose four lucky numbers or close your eyes and choose four random numbers and you could be the lucky winner.

Church News

There will be no Saturday evening mass in Ballyduff or Portlaw for the next four weeks as the priest will be away. However, Sunday morning mass will be offered here in Ballyduff every Sunday morning at 10am. The only weekday mass in Ballyduff will be on Thursday mornings at 11am.

This was a wonderful, generous gesture and the club is very grateful. We wish the team the very best of luck as they proudly wear their new jerseys in their club colours.

Official Opening

The Kilmeaden Greenway Link was officially opened on Tuesday May 16th, and this also incorporated the launch of the Ballyduff and Kilmeaden Community Garden. On a beautiful sunny morning a large crowd gathered to watch as our Mayor John O Leary officially cut the ribbon on this fantastic facility. He spoke on the importance of The Greenway and its accessibility for all. He thanked all his colleagues in the council, all those involved in the design and construction and local landowners John and Joan Stephenson who were so accommodating with their land.
The Mayor spoke about his enthusiasm for the new community garden project which he said would be a fabulous facility for the whole community to come together and enjoy. He invited the Chairman of the group Peter Jacob to speak to the crowd and explain the project. Peter explained that the group had now received their licence and were looking forward to getting the project started. He told the crowd that this would be a community project, with something for everyone and he said that ideas for design and layout were welcome from anyone, and he encouraged people to become involved in the project.
There was a fantastic, positive air at the opening and the launch with people of all ages attending including a group of children from the local Kiddies Kingdom creche and Montessori, who were able to walk back to the creche safely on the Greenway. Recent Deaths.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the O Keeffe family, Blacknock on the recent death of Patrick Alymer. Patrick was a quiet, unassuming man who was very popular with his neighbours. Patrick’s reposal took place at Aidan Walsh and sons Funeral home in Cappoquin and then on to Cork for private cremation.
We also extend our sympathy to Nancy O Sullivan, Matthews Cross and Peggy O Shea, Ballyduff Hill on the death of their sister-in-law Brigid Power from Ballymacmague. Brigid’s funeral mass took place in St. Mary’s Church, Dungarvan followed by burial in Kilgobinet cemetery. May her sweet, gentle soul rest in peace.
Our community was plunged into sadness on hearing of the untimely death of Gillian Whelan from Carrickphilip. Gillian was a strong, caring and loving lady whose family meant the world to her, and she was a true and loyal friend. Her daughters Joanne and Jennifer were her whole world, as were her mother Joan and sister Sally. She was a fantastic worker, great chef and a great lover of the outdoors and the garden. She loved nothing more than a good chat and a laugh and she will be sadly missed. Gillian’s funeral mass took place in Ballyduff Church followed by cremation in Cork. We pray that Gillian now enjoys the peace and calm of her heavenly home.

Ballyduff AFC

Ballyduff AFC are continuing their fundraising clothes collection, so clear out those wardrobes and hot presses and bring your unwanted items to the dressing rooms at Ballyduff AFC grounds.
The club would like to congratulate club player Sophie Power who has signed with the Waterford FC U17 ladies’ team. Sophie has played with Ballyduff up through the years and the club wish her the very best of luck and look forward to watching her play.

Waterford Suir Valley Railway

Waterford Suir Valley Railway have now launched their Summer schedule and are looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors to Kilmeaden. The train will now operate on the hour from 11am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and from 12 noon to 5pm on Sundays. Tickets are available online or can be purchased at the station. Treat yourself to a beautiful scenic trip on the train or bring your relatives and visitors and show them what we have to offer here in beautiful Kilmeaden and of course don’t leave without visiting The Whistlestop Café for some very tasty treats.

First Holy Communion will take place in Ballyduff on Saturday May 20th and the boys and girls are busy preparing for their special day.

Greenway Opening

The official opening of the Kilmeaden Greenway link will take place on Tuesday May 16th at 12.15pm at the Kilmeade train station car park. The opening will incorporate the launch of the Ballyduff and Kilmeaden Community Garden. Our Mayor John O Leary will perform the opening duties and you are all invited to come along and celebrate with the community.

21st Celebrations

The Waterford Male Voice Choir will celebrate their 21st anniversary by hosting a charity concert at The Holy Cross Church in Tramore on Friday May 19th at 7.30pm. Tickets cost just €15, and the proceeds will go to the Tramore Sea Rescue. The choir will be joined by The Barrack Street Concert Band, The Kalimbas and Dominic McGorian. Two local men Eamonn O Leary and Declan Ryan are part of the choir and really looking forward to performing and raising money for a great charity.
